Another winery from which I got a really interesting overview at the Vinitaly 2022 is Kellerei Tramina jewel of theSouth Tyrol. A winery known for its Gewurztraminer - which has won it a place in the hearts of fans of this extraordinary grape variety (including me) - it also has many other interesting wines such as the Chardonnay Riserva and Pinot Noir Riserva. Then there would be a separate chapter to be opened with the Lagrain Riserva, but I will tell you about this grape variety tomorrow...
Tramin: 12 tastings I really enjoyed
"Glarea' Alto Adige Chardonnay 2020 DOC, Tramin Winery - 13.5%vol
Gravelly, low-lying terrain with a wide temperature range.
My tasting. It is bright greenish yellow and consistent. The nose is very interesting because it is a different chardonnay than the ones I am used to, insofar as varietal notes are recognisable. Very elegant, perfumed and fine, with notes of vanilla, white chocolate, white peach, pear and acacia flowers. In the mouth it is consistent, confirming the elegance found on the nose, it is very structured and savoury, but has a significant pseudo-caloricity and I think it needs to spend some time in the bottle to round out. The sip is long and leaves a sensation of warmth.
"Pepi' Sauvignon 2021 Alto Adige DOC, Tramin Winery - 14%vol
Vineyards on both sides of the valley, in one the sun arrives early in the morning and leaves early, while in the vineyards on the other side of the valley the sun arrives later and leaves later. The name Pepi comes from the names of the two vineyards, Penon and Pinzon.
My tasting. It is bright greenish yellow and quite consistent. The nose is exceptional with all the aromas of the variety developed in the most pleasant way possible, and very elegant. One recognises intense notes of candied orange, passion fruit and very elegant. In the mouth it is more poised, very balanced, soft, fresh and savoury. Long varietal finish.
"Troy" Chardonnay Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018, Cantina Tramin - 14%vol
Unfiltered, it does 11 months barrique + 22 months large barrel. Vineyards at an altitude of 550 metres. Has great potential for evolution in the bottle.
My tasting. It is a brilliant and consistent straw yellow. The nose is very delicate, fiine and elegant, but it is in the mouth that it expresses its full potential. Notes of vanilla, white chocolate, hazelnut, herbs. Consistent, extremely varietal, you can feel the wood but it is very well dosed. In the mouth, it is very elegant, very savoury, very fresh, with a great structure. Very long vanilla finish.
"Stoan' Alto Adige DOC 2020, Tramin Winery – 13.5%vol
Chardonnay 65%, sauvignon 20%, 10% pinot blanc, 5% gewurztraminer
My tasting. It is bright greenish yellow and consistent. The nose is very delicate and fine, the varietal scents of chardonnay and sauvignon are immediately recognisable, then later comes a rose note characteristic of traminer. Here I believe the pinot blanc has a function of taste-olfactory roundness. Notes of passion fruit, ripe white peach, Rose blossom and dried fig just caramelised intertwine delicately. In the mouth it is soft, structured, very fresh, savoury and with a long citrus finish.
"Stoan" Alto Adige DOC 2013, Tramin Winery - 13.5% vol.
It is an intense straw yellow with deep gold reflections, very bright and consistent. The nose is delicate and elegant and curiously, the note of dried fig just caramelised has evolved particularly and rounded off with a hint of paraffin. I do not find it as broad as I would like, but it is quite complex and fine. After a few moments in the glass. In the mouth it is voluminous, structured, consistent and fine, with a well-dosed pseudo-caloricity. Long in the glass. Definitely to be tasted in a few years because it is still a little closed and can give much more.

"Selida' Alto Adige DOC Gewurztraminer 2021, Tramin Winery - 14%vol
From an altitude of 350 metres to 550 metres ideal limestone clay with a layer of porphyry underneath.
My tasting. It is straw yellow with greenish hues, consistent. The nose is intense and elegant with varietal notes of rose, papaya and almond. In the mouth it is very consistent, very structured, with an abundant pseudo-caloricity that I had found in chardonnay and lots of savouriness. The sip is very long and savoury.
"Nussbaumer' Alto Adige DOC Gewurztraminer 2020, Tramin Winery - 15%vol
My tasting. It is pale straw yellow with greenish reflections, very consistent. The nose is a little less intense than the previous one, but more elegant. Notes of almond, rose, maracuja, pineapple, white chocolate. In the mouth it is very consistent, elegant, soft, savoury, despite the alcohol content it has a more measured pseudo-caloricity, although I do not feel it is ready yet. The alcohol content is not felt too much, it is very structured. Very long sip.
"Nussbaumer' Alto Adige DOC Gewurztraminer 2011, Winery Tramin - 15%vol
My tasting. It is bright golden yellow, very consistent. The nose is very intense and FABULOUS, very elegant and intense with notes of apricot, toasted hazelnut, white chocolate, aromatic herbs, candied pear. In the mouth, it is very consistent, very fresh, savoury, with a nice softness and freshness that contrasts with the warmth. Long almondy sip.
"Roen' Alto Adige DOC Gewurztraminer 2020, Tramin Winery - 10%vol
It is an intense and brilliant golden yellow. The nose is intense and truly exceptional, very elegant and fine. Hints of apricot, caramelised fig, wildflower honey, violets, dried roses and hazelnuts are discernible. In the mouth it is soft, with a residual sugar quite present, but nevertheless amalgamated, coherently structured and very fresh, very long.
"Terminum Alto Adige DOC Gewurztraminer 2020, Tramin Winery - 10% vol.
The difference with Roen is mainly the vineyards because Terminum is located behind the basin and therefore botritis cinerea develops.
My tasting. It is an intense and brilliant golden yellow. The nose is the end of the world, very elegant and fine. One recognises notes of apricot, saffron, fresh dates, and walnut. On the palate it is consistent, very fresh, soft and with a residual sugar that is more noticeable in the Terminum, although the exceptional sapidity balances it well. Enveloping, broad, round, structured and very fresh with an infinite sip.

"Maglen' Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva 2019 - 14%vol
It is transparent ruby red, consistent. The nose is DIVINE, you can smell the 14 months of barrique with 20% of new wood. Vanilla, a hint of black pepper, violets, perfectly ripe cherries, burnt coffee. In the mouth it is very elegant, consistent, very soft, fresh, structured and with a long sip of vanilla that envelops the palate.
"Urban" Alto Adige Lagrain Riserva 2019, Tramin Winery - 13.5% vol.
It is a concentrated ruby red with violet hues, impenetrable and consistent. The nose is delicate with a very varietal vinous note that imposes itself on the 14 months of barrique with 20% of new wood. Only secondarily does vanilla, raspberry, black mulberry, violet and blood come through. In the mouth, it confirmed what I had heard on the nose, i.e. the structure of the Lagrain and its intensity immediately contrasted with the wood. Very long sip and great pleasantness.
The wines of the Kellerei Tramin are certainly all of great quality, but three were the absolute 'goodies' for me: nussbaumer tramin, maglen (pinot noir) tramin and terminum tramin. As is almost always the case, these are wines that deserve more time after release to be fully appreciated, and here I could spark an interesting debate: who is responsible for bottle ageing? The restaurant or the winery? I am curious to hear your opinion, perhaps in a comment!
Cheers 🍷
Chiara
